A cult ballet...

If the choreographer is asked: What is Swan Lake? He replies: "It is the country of Prince Siegfried's dreams, where he can find harmony. The Prince created for himself the ideal of love which is the Princess of Swan Lake. For Siegfried, it is the symbol of the nobility. But the most important to me is the swan which is the personification of the beauty of the soul. It seems to me that this story reflects the inner journey of each one of us, our aspirations and disillusions in search of happiness and harmony. I hope that this performance reaches the soft spot of everyone. "

It is known that Tchaikovsky was very interested in the life of Ludwig II of Bavaria who by his tragic destiny is often symbolized by the swan and, who consciously or not, was chosen as a prototype of the dreamer Prince Siegfried. Despite the foreign origin of the story that this ballet relates, it is important to note that "The Swan Lake" is a ballet purely of Russian national tradition. Indeed, one can find swans in many Russian romantic narratives and it is guaranteed that the choreography of the ballet very often imitates movements in circle of Slavic dances. Again, even if the story takes place in Germany, the image of the swan and the theme of faithful love is unquestionably relatable to Russia. It is in this cult  ballet  that one finds the Russian soul in the broadest sense of the term, it is the most accomplished artistic expression for a danced work, it is a conception of the dance, a style which has made this school of thought better known as the Russian school "Vaganova".
